There are over one million licenced shotguns in the UK, most of which are used for sports like clay pigeon shooting. Other guns are kept by gamekeepers and other wildlife professionals, in order to control animal numbers and protect habitats. But many licenced gun owners believe their hobby or work is under threat from campaigners who would like to see a complete ban on firearms throughout the UK.
These campaigners point to incidents which have seen injuries and even deaths result from the misuse of guns as evidence that no-one should be allowed to own one, and have the backing of a large proportion of the public (a 2010 YouGov poll found that 30% of UK citizens would support a complete ban on firearms, while over half were in favour of more restrictions). As gun safety is such a hot topic with very vocal arguments on both sides, it is apparent that demonstrating a responsible attitude toward the issues must be a high priority for the gun owning community.
There is already a large body of regulations relating to gun security, including where guns can be stored and who can handle them, and all the evidence indicates that the vast majority of licence holders are keen to comply with all that is asked of them. When shootings do occur, it is often found that the antagonist had no legal right to possess a gun, and that the firearm was stolen or taken without the consent of the owner. All this begs the question: what voluntary steps can gun owners take to contribute to shotgun safety, thereby improving public perception of their sport?

In order to obtain a UK Shot Gun Licence, and applicant must prove they are able to ‘securely store’ a shotgun. However, as with all valuable items, with enough time and determination it is likely an intruder could defeat any gun safe or cabinet. Also, firearms are vulnerable while being transported from one location to another. An additional level of shotgun security would be helpful, especially one which is attached to the gun itself, rendering it inoperable even if it has been stolen.
This is where Gun-Lok comes in. Gun-Lok is a cylindrical locking device from the Shut-Lok company, which is manufactured to the dimensions of a standard shotgun cartridge. These gun locks fit into the breach of a shotgun and lock in place, disabling the firearm. The locks can only be opened with the supplied key, and the rear edge of each gun lock sits flush with the edge of the barrel making it invulnerable to clamping and leverage tools. In fact, even if a thief were to escape with the shotgun and set about it with a range of standard hand and power tools, the gun safety lock is designed to actively resist attempts to forcibly remove it, even rendering the firearm permanently unusable before being compromised.
